CLIFTON FORGE – Jolly Old Saint Nicholas made his first official appearance in the Highlands Friday night as he took place in the annual Clifton Forge Christmas Parade.
The parade, which was sponsored by Clifton Forge Main Street Inc., was held in front of large crowd on a perfectly clear winter’s evening.
The theme for this year’s parade was “Let’s Celebrate Green.”
The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard presented the colors at the head of the parade and were followed down Ridgeway and Main streets by Parade Marshal Joe Anderson.
Clifton Forge Main Street Inc. awarded prizes in the following categories:
Best Appearing Vehicle: Dixie Gas, first place; Iron Gate Fire and Rescue, second place; Don Wilson, Honda trike and trailer, third place.
Best Appearing Antique Vehicle: 1977 Corvette, David Halsey, first place; Mercury, Bob Shull, second place; Antique Fire Truck, Chris Fisher, third place.
Most Comical Entry: William Deisher with puppies, first place; Whistlers, second place.
Best Appearing Theme Float: Cub Scout Pack 2, first place; Boy Scouts Troop 2, second place; Town of Clifton Forge, third place.
Best Appearing Religious Theme Float: Epworth United Methodist Church, first place; Main Street Baptist Church, second place; Come As You Are Ministries, third place.
Best Appearing Adult Marching Unit: Rebels of Rhythm, first place; Tri-County Cloggers, second place; Kountry Kickers, third place.
Best Appearing Junior Marching Unit: Covington Highlighters, first place; Rhinestone Rockers and Junior Rockers, second place.
Best Appearing Community Service Organization: Cheez Claus, first place; Cub Scout Pack 82, second place; Alleghany Humane Society, third place.
Best Appearing Horse and Rider: Connie Craft, first place; Shawna Sartain, second place; Tiffany Dame, third place.
