MONETA – The Alleghany wrestling team traveled to Staunton?River Thursday for a tri-match and fell to fellow Blue Ridge District opponents Northside and Rockbridge.

The Vikings topped the Mountaineers, 63-18, while the Wildcats edged Alleghany, 42-36.

“Northside really took it to us. You could tell they really wanted to avenge us beating them last year,” said Alleghany coach Dale Burdette. “The Rockbridge match was a different story. The match should have went to a tie-breaker with the score tied 39-all. With seven seconds left, the official awarded Derek Burhenn two points for a takedown at the boundary.

“After the opposing coach protested, the official changed his call,” added Burdette. “I know referees aren’t going to be perfect. It’s been reviewed on film and the ref missed this one. Our team will have to use this as motivation moving forward.”

Alleghany will be back in action today and Saturday at the Knights of the Roundtable Tournament at Cave Spring.
Wrestling starts Friday at 5 p.m.
