One spot out of a playoff berth.
That’s where the Alleghany Mountaineers and Bath County Chargers are with four weeks left in the high school football regular season.
The Mounties, 3-3 on the year, are ranked seventh in Region III, Division 3, one position out of the top six and a trip to the postseason, while the Chargers, 1-5, are 17th in the Division 1, Eastern Section, a playoff tournament that will take the top 16 teams.
In Region III, it’s shaping up to be a three-team for two-spot race for fifth and sixth.
Rustburg (17.71), Fort Defiance (17.67) and Alleghany (16.33) could go down to the wire in the playoff chase.

Rustburg: Friday – at Heritage (4-2); Oct. 28 – Brookville (7-0); Nov. 4 – at Jefferson Forest (5-1)
Fort Defiance: Friday – at Harrisonburg (5-1); Oct. 21 – Broadway (6-0); Oct. 28 – Waynesboro (1-5); Nov. 4 – at Turner Ashby (0-6)
Alleghany: Friday – at William Byrd (2-4); Oct. 21 – Rockbridge County (5-1); Oct. 28 – at Lord Botetourt (2-4); Nov. 4 – Staunton River (4-2)
Despite just one win, Bath County is still in the thick of things in the revamped Group A chase.
The Chargers are less than two-tenths of a point behind No. 16 West Point for the final postseason berth.
Covington (4-3) remained in the No. 7 spot after their win Friday night in Hot Springs and needs a couple of wins to secure a first round home game on the weekend of November 11-12.
Region C volleyball is also going the way of point ratings to determine regional tournament seeding this year.
Bath County leads the Division 1 point race, while Covington is fourth. Six teams qualify for the regional tournament.
