RICHMOND (AP) – The Virginia Municipal League says legislation to end Virginia’s 30-year ban on uranium mining should not be introduced in the 2012 session.
The position statement is contained in the league’s annual legislative program and backed by its membership.
The association representing cities, towns and counties in Virginia says it supports studies evaluating the impact of uranium mining and milling on downstream water supplies and the health and safety of uranium miners.
The league said it’s important to fully analyze the results of a National Academy of Sciences study on the statewide impact of uranium mining before legislation is introduced.
That report is due in December.
Virginia Uranium Inc. wants to mine a 119-million-pound deposit in Pittsylvania County. It maintains the mining and milling can be conducted safely.
