DEAR AUNT MARY,
Please explain why the city added those trees to the city property in the 900 and 1000 blocks of South Alleghany Avenue and then not maintain the property around the trees?
It just looks like a wilderness.
I see that they maintain city property around the trees they planted on Fudge Street and Covington Tire.
Please explain why these city beautification programs are kept groomed in some areas and not others.
By the way, the South Alleghany Avenue sidewalks seem to extend down Chestnut Street, Walnut Street and Pine Street and not South Alleghany Avenue in the 700 and 800 blocks for example.
I know about funding but these projects seem to have money for some areas and not others. We all pay the same tax rate. Another example is decorative lighting for a subdivision.

I won’t begin to explain the workings of Covington’s city government. I gave up years ago when they bragged that the city did not have water meters but didn’t mention that businesses and churches in the city have them. They still do.
I drove down the 900 and 1000 blocks of Alleghany Avenue Thursday and I think the trees look good. There was only one area where the grass was somewhat high and that area had only two trees.
You must keep in mind that with budget cuts, cities, counties and the state are mowing less each year. This year we have had rain which encouraged the grass to grow. My nephew has been busy at his house trying to keep up with the grass cutting.
I suggest you get used to seeing high grass in the future especially since gasoline is around $4 per gallon. It takes gas and manpower to keep up with the grass and the manpower can push departments into overtime which is expensive for the city and taxpayers.
If you have a question about the beautification in the city or where sidewalks are installed, I suggest you contact the member of city council in the district in which you live.
That person can see that the concerns reach the proper department until we have a new city manager.
I must mention that some of those sidewalks were funded with federal money and if you know anything about using federal funds, there many hoops to jump through and many times, the project has no rhyme or reason.
