Kent Bullock’s 34-yard third quarter touchdown run broke a 6-6 tie as the Covington ‘B League’ football team repeated as Youth League Super Bowl champions with a 12-6 win over the Alleghany West Titans Wednesday at Casey Field.
The opener of the Youth League Super Bowl was a defensive stalemate for most of the game as both offenses struggled to find the end zone.
Covington fumbled on the first play of the game, but their defense was able to hold on 4th-and-2 and two plays later Jaun Miller raced untouched around the right side for a 63-yard touchdown run to give Covington a 6-0 lead with 4:13 to play in the first quarter.
The lead stood until late in the first half when the Titans capitalized off a Covington turnover.
Taking over at their own 39 with 1:04 to play in the second quarter, Alleghany West needed just one play to go the distance.
Running back Mitch Mithcell looked to have been stuffed up the middle, but the back broke around the left side of the Covington defense and raced 61 yards to the end zone to knot the game at six at intermission.
Ironically, it was Covington taking advantage of an Alleghany West turnover just two plays into the second half to put this one away.
Ed Tyson pounced on a loose ball at the Covington 40-yard line just two minutes into the second half and Covington took its first possession of the second half.
A bad snap on the first play of the drive backed Covington up nine yards, but Bullock covered 30 yards on the next play to move the chains to the Alleghany West 39.
Miller picked up 12 yards on a reverse on first down to put the ball at the Titans 27, but Covington would go backwards from there.
After two plays netted negative seven yards, Bullock took the inside handoff and race 34 yards to the end zone to give Covington a 12-6 lead with 2:47 to play in the third quarter.
The Titans would fail to convert a 4th-and-3 on their next drive after Dallan Givens stopped Wesley McClear a yard short and Bullock intercepted a Garrett Morgan pass on the following drive.
Morgan’s pass on 4th-and-10 of the Titans’ final drive fell harmlessly incomplete and Covington took three straight knees to run out the clock and preserve the win.
Miller led the Covington offense with 88 yards and a touchdown on five carries, while Bullock had 63 yards and a touchdown on three rushing attempts.
Mitchell led the Titans offense with 67 yards and a touchdown on four carries, while McClear recorded 39 yards on 14 totes.
