Today’s Headline: Veterans Will Be Paid Bonus In Few Weeks
Many World War veterans of Covington and vicinity are doubtless desirous of learning full details as to when and by what means they will receive their bonus bonds and when and how the cash may be received thereafter.
Mr. Thomas B. McCaleb, Covington postmaster, advises that he has just been informed that the bonus bonds will be mailed on June 15 and should be received at the local post office early Tuesday morning, June 16.
Orange Hughes was arrested at his home in Low Moor Saturday night by Sheriff R.A. Caldwell and Deputy Sheriff Harry Tingler for allegedly having assaulted his wife and cut her about her arms and hands.

Today’s Headline: W.O. Ryder Named Deputy Sheriff
Winters Oscar Ryder, 36, of 1543 S. Franklin Ave., Covington, has been hired as deputy sheriff, replacing G.M. Whitesides, who has resigned, effective June 15, Alleghany County Sheriff M.W. Swoope said today.
Rider was employed by Industrial Rayon Corporation and its local plant for 16 years. He is married and has one child. Whitesides will become an agent for the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

Today’s Headline: Route616 Bridge Reopened.
A state highway bridge on Route 616 in Alleghany County was opened to traffic Friday afternoon, according to a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Highways.
The bridge, between Routes 617 and 618 in the Rich Patch section of the county collapsed May 16. There were no vehicles on the bridge when it collapsed and no injuries were reported.
Four area banks – State Bank of the Alleghenies, First Virginia Bank-Highlands, Mountain National Bank and First National Bank of Clifton Forge – have received an “A” rating from Sheshunoff and Company, the leading bank analysis firm in the country.

Today’s Headline: Millie Wilson Named President Of Spina Bifida Organization.
Millie Wilson of Covington has been chosen to be the president of the board of directors of the Spina Bifida Association of the Roanoke Valley.
She has been an advocate for several groups throughout her life and continues to increase awareness and help others affected by Spina Bifida today.
A reported vandalism at Covington High School is being investigated by the Covington Police Department.
