Today’s Headline: Busy Weekend For Local Police.
After several very peaceful weeks in Covington, the local police experienced an unusually busy weekend. A total of over a dozen arrests were made, most of them on charges of drunkenness.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Chittum of Wills Street spent Easter Sunday with Mr. Chittum’s parents in Rockbridge County.

Today’s Headline: Local Community Starts Cancer Crusade Saturday.
The Cancer Crusade for the Covington-West Alleghany Chapter of the American Cancer Society will open April 15 with a goal of $3,000, Nelson Y. Coxe, crusade chairman for 1961, said today.
The Rich Patch Mines Church Circle will meet Friday at 7 p.m. at the church with Mrs. Lewis Shanks and Mrs. Walter Persinger as hostesses.

Today’s Headline: Tractor Fire Burns Two Acres Of Land.
Two acres of land burned along Dolly Ann this weekend when a tractor caught fire after turning over on an embankment.
Mary Alice Lipes, 13, a former resident of Covington, has been named a winner in the Young Writer’s Contest for 1985-1986.

Today’s Headline: Salyers Named All-State.
Sami Jo-Salyers, an Alleghany High School junior, has been named as an honorable mention selection to the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-State girls basketball team.
An exhibition of work by artist Jill Jensen is on display at the Alleghany Highlands Arts & Crafts Center from April 11 through 29 and May 15 through 27.
