June 3, 1936
Today’s Headline: Selma Reports Jail Trusty In Cutting Scrape.
George Madison, a trusty at the Alleghany County jail, was being sought for allegedly having assaulted and injured a Mrs. Evelyn Moneymaker in Selma early this morning after he had slipped away from the jail last night. The woman received a superficial knife wound across her stomach. She received medical treatment by Dr. L.A. Houff but was not taken to the hospital.
Myrtle Bowles, the 19-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Bowles of Mount Pleasant was drowned in a pool in the back yard of their home at 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

June 3, 1961
Today’s Headline: CHS Seniors Graduation Exercises Held Last Night.
One hundred forty-two Covington High School graduating seniors received diplomas last night before a capacity audience at Curfman Hall.
The graduates heard Covington School Superintendent W.R. Beazley warn them although they have completed their high school education, they have just begun to learn.
Earl Rhodenizer of 311 Holly Street, Covington, reported petty larceny of a fenderskirt valued at $8 from his 1953 sedan to police at 2:21 Thursday.

June 3, 1986
Today’s Headline: Andrew John Named Assistant Chessie Superintendent.
Andrew D. John, a native of New Carlisle, Indiana, who has been employed by the Chessie System since 1981, has been named assistant superintendent of Operations of the Virginia Division.
G.C. Fawley, general manager of Honda Cars of Covington, announced today that his company has purchased Linkous Nissan/Datsun of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., and is moving the franchise to Covington one mile north of the city limits on Highway 220 north, adjacent to Honda Cars of Covington.

Today’s Headline: 55 Diplomas Are Presented At Bath County High School.
“And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
With this quotation from Abraham Lincoln, as its class motto, 55 seniors received their diplomas during graduation exercises Friday night at Bath County High School.
The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded the Highlands Community Bank Scholarship to Sara Arrington, daughter of Sam and Fran Arrington of Covington.
