Ten seniors at Alleghany High School, Bath County High School and Covington High School have been awarded a total of $200,000 in scholarships by The Glencairn Foundation, which was formed in 2009 from funds received from the estate of an anonymous donor.

Recipients of the scholarships this year are:

Alleghany High School: Taylor Danielle Broughfman (James Madison University), Kalyn Rayne Carter (West Virginia University), Allyson Marie Umstead (Marshall University) and Mary Elizabeth Umstead (Davis and Elkins College).

Bath County High School: Mason B. Ailstock (Virginia Tech), William Lee Bums (Bridgewater College) and Kortni Taylor Lindsay (Radford University).

Covington High School: Amanda Maxine Byer (James Madison University), Katelynn Noelle Grimes (Virginia Tech) and Aaron Michael Martin (Concord University).

The scholarships are for $5,000 per year for four years, a total of $20,000 for each recipient. $312,000 of scholarships have been awarded in 2010 and 2011, the only years the Foundation has made grants.

The scholarships were announced Wednesday by Clifton Forge attorneys James D. Snyder and R. Meade Snyder, trustees of The Glencairn Foundation.

The scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of merit in academic achievement, citizenship, leadership, extra curricular activities and community involvement. Recipients must major in one of the following areas of study in college: art, English – grammar and composition, English literature, languages, religion, history, philosophy, music, psychology or sociology at a non profit, accredited, four-year college or university.

James Snyder said scholarships from The Glencairn Foundation will be awarded annually to qualifying students at the three schools who are selected by a scholarship committee at each school and by the trustees.
