DALEVILLE – The Blue Ridge District went low Monday at Ashley Plantation.

Lord Botetourt put together a tidy 1-under-par team score of 291, while Staunton River’s John Lyle fired a 4-under-par 69 to capture medalist honors at the third BRD mini-tournament of the season.

Led by a 3-under 70 from Justin Nichols, Botetourt rolled to a 30-shot win over second place Rockbridge County.

The Cavaliers also extended their team lead over second place William Byrd to 48 strokes with three tournaments to play.

For the third straight tournament, Michael Kessinger was low man for Alleghany.

Kessinger fashioned an 89 to the lead the Mountaineers, while Travis Allard and Daniel Persinger, both with 101s, and Dru Beirne with a 105 were the other counters.

Other Alleghany players were Seth Brown with a 109 and Tristin Bird with a 113.

“It was the first time Michael has played No. 1 for us,” said AHS coach Marty Wood. “He has proven he’s our number one for now. But he still has a lot of room for improvement and he knows it.”

Lyle, who became the third different BRD medalist in three events, surged to a tie with Botetourt’s Brandon Feury in the cumulative individual standings, both with 5-over-par totals of 221.

Alleghany will be back in action two more times this week.

The Mountaineers host Covington today and travel to Cliff View on Thursday for a 4-team match with Highland County, Bath County and the host Cougars.

The BRD mini-tournament season ends next week with matches at Lexington Country Club on Tuesday, Mariner’s Landing on Wednesday and Hanging Rock on Thursday.
