Alleghany dropped a pair of Blue Ridge District wrestling matches Wednesday night at Mountaineer Gym.

The Mounties lost a 53-30 decision to Staunton River and lost a tiebreaker to William Byrd after the two teams had tied their match at 39-39.

The Byrd match was decided by the eighth tiebreaker – most first points scored in all matches.

“Two of our seniors got forfeits so they didn’t factor in to the tiebreaker,” said AHS coach Dale Burdette. “But two other matches could have went either way and we wouldn’t have to had the tiebreaker.”

Jake Daly (106), Cole Murray (126), C.J. Chittum (182) and Addison Morgan (285) all went 2-0 for Alleghany.

Daly and Chittum both recorded two pins, Morgan won a pin and a decision, while Murray recorded a pin and a forfeit win.

John Reed (132) Jeremy Charles (152), Zach Rusmisel (160) and Peyton Vail (195) were all 1-1 on the night.

“We just have to keep working and continue to get better,” Burdette added.

The Mountaineers will return to the mat this weekend at Kendall’s Knights of the Roundtable Tournament at Cave Spring High School. The tournament is a fundraiser for Kendall Bayne, a Cave Spring student with cancer.
