The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing concerning improvements to the Route 661 Bridge (Midland Trail/Ogle Creek Road) over Ogle Creek in Alleghany County.

The meeting will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11 in Callaghan Elementary School located at 4050 Midland Trail, Covington.

Citizens can come in during meeting hours and discuss the project on a one-on-one basis with VDOT officials and designers.

Written comments can be submitted at the meeting or within 10 days after the meeting date to Heather Williams, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 811 Commerce Road, Staunton, Va. 24401-9029.

Oral comments can be recorded at the meeting with the assistance of a court reporter.

This project is to replace the Route 661 two-lane bridge and approaches over Ogle Creek in the Alleghany County. The project is approximately 0.10-mile long and extends from 0.30 mile east of Route 709 (Midland Trail) to 0.40 mile east of Route 709.

The newly constructed bridge will consist of a reinforced concrete deck slab supported on steel or prestressed concrete beams with concrete railings.

Approximately 50-feet of the Route 661 bridge approach roadway pavement on either side of the existing bridge will be disturbed as part of the bridge construction and will be reconstructed.

The existing Route 719 (Bellegray Lane) entrance right off the bridge will be relocated approximately 100-feet to the west of the bridge to improve right turn movements from Route 719 to Route 661 and allow for the installation of guardrail off of the bridge.

VDOT historical data reports an annual average daily traffic (AADT) of 1,500 (2010) vehicles per day with 4 percent truck traffic.

Significant future growth is not anticipated.
Right of way and utility relocation activities are scheduled to begin in the fall of 2014. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in the fall of 2017.

The total estimated cost for this project is $3,523,704 with $430,765 for preliminary engineering, $95,387 for right of way activities, and $2,997,552 for construction.
