A downed tree caused a widespread power outage in Covington and areas of Alleghany County Tuesday night.
Karl Neddenien, a spokesman for Dominion Power, said the outage occurred at the Jackson River substation in Covington and affected 1,156 customers.
Power was lost at 7:05 p.m. Dominion restored electricity to 930 customer within one-half hour. Power was fully restored to all customers by 8:35 p.m., Neddenien said.
BARC Electric Cooperative also reported power outages in Alleghany, Bath and Rockbridge counties Tuesday evening, and all outages were restored by 11 p.m.
About 60 BARC customers in the Morris Hill area of Alleghany County lost power, while in Bath County, some 150 residents in the Millboro, Burnsville and Wilson’s Creek Road areas were without power.
Dale Meyer, BARC operations manager in Millboro, said high winds coupled with weakened trees from the recent winter storm combined to contribute to Tuesday’s outage.
“We’re still recovering from the snowstorm,” he said.
Meyer said BARC has either replaced or is in the process of replacing about 40 wooden power poles damaged by the storm that started on Tuesday, March 5.
