ALTAVISTA - Harold Madison Ramsey Jr., 81, of 1637 Dearborn Rd., Evington died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born July 10, 1931, in Lynchburg, a son of the late Harold Madison Ramsey Sr. and Hallie McGann Ramsey.
Harold was raised at Boys’ Home in Covington and attended school there. He later went on to college at Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee and then returned to Covington to teach elementary school. He then moved to the Lynchburg area, where he coached basketball at the Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing for 10 years and worked at General Electric for over 30 years. Harold was a member of the Evington Ruritan Club, Eubank Lodge No. 262 A.F.& A.M., a 32nd degree Mason and volunteered at the Altavista YMCA.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Marie Reynolds of Evington and her daughters, Linda and Pam Reynolds; three daughters, Kathy Woodson and her husband, Barry, and Sue Clemmer and her husband, Danny, all of Charlottesville and Belinda Jane Ramsey of Covington; two brothers, Robert Ramsey of Covington and Clyde Ramsey of Lynchburg; three sisters, Peggy Blakeman and her husband, Frank, Brenda Muller and her husband, Charle,s and Sandy McCoy all of Ohio; eight grandchildren and five great-granchildren.
He was preceded in death by three children, Mary Lee Ramsey, Harold Ramsey, III and Valerie Ramsey and a sister, June Palmer.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista, with the Rev. David Bayse with interment to follow in Altavista Memorial Park with Masonic rites to be conducted at the graveside.
The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence.
