Mrs. Florence Gunter Ayers, 87, of 306 Dairy Street, died Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at The Woodlands, Clifton Forge.

She was the wife of the late Emmett Melvin Ayers, Jr.

Mrs. Ayers was born March 30, 1923 in Asheville, N.C., the daughter of the late William Gunter and Nellie Rosalee Stalcup.

She was employed as a machine operator by the former Halmode, Inc. before her retirement.

She was member of Christ United Methodist Church, enjoyed working crossword puzzles, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Ayers is survived by three sons, Emmett M. Ayers, III and wife, Ruth of Vinton, Gary A. Ayers and wife, Vicki of Fincastle, and Steve Ayers and wife, Peggy of Clifton Forge; one daughter, Teresa Ayers of Covington; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Ayers, Greg Entsminger, Jr. and wife Heather, Charity Simmons and husband Herbert, Christopher Ayers and wife Kate, Kari Brown, Matthew Ayers and Jordan Ayers, Bricen Linksweiler and McKenzey Linksweiler; eight great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ruth Givens; special friend, Nancy Moss; and also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ruben Foscoe.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Snider officiating.

Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Teresa Ayers, 122 W. Phillip Street, Covington.
