BRIDGEWATER – Alleghany’s Cimarron Nicely kept his cross country season alive with a seventh place finish in Tuesday’s Region III cross country meet at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds.
Nicely crossed the finish line of the 5K course in 16 minutes, 21 seconds, just 26 seconds off the pace of winner Stuart’s Draft’s Daniel Richards’ time of 15:54.
“Cimarron gave us another strong effort,” said AHS cross country coach Howard Nicely. “This finish qualified him for the state meet. We’re happy to have the opportunity to return to the state meet and he will continue to work hard.”
William Byrd won the boys team title with 91 points, while Jefferson Forest was second, Brookville was third and E.C. Glass was fourth.
Alison Adkins, Alleghany’s lone female competitor in the field, finished 61st out of 105 female runners. Northside’s Erin Wheeler won the race with a time of 18:09.
Adkins finished the 3.1-mile course in 22 minutes, two seconds, a personal best for the AHS senior.
“This was Alison’s fastest time ever,” stated Nicely. “It’s a good way to end your season by running your best race. Alison has been a big contributor to our program the past five years. We will definitely miss her next year.”
Jefferson Forest took first, Northside was second, Harrisonburg was third and Wilson Memorial was fourth in the team competition.
The top four teams and top 15 individuals advance to next week’s Group AA meet.
