NORFOLK – Dr. Frederick G. Woodson, 95, of the 6300 block of Granby Street, Norfolk, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family Friday, Sept. 24, 2010.
He was a native of Covington and was the son of the late Arch and Margaret Donahoe Woodson.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sara Frances Jacobs Woodson, to whom he was married for 47 years.
Dr. Woodson graduated from Covington High School, class of 1932, and graduated with a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Virginia in 1938. His internship training was at St. Elizabethïon Hospital, Richmond, from 1938 to 939 and his residency at the University of Virginia, Department of Neurology and Psychiatry from 1939 to 1942, and residency at Boston City Hospital, Neurological Unit from 1942 to 1943. He entered the United States Army Medical Corps in 1943 and attained the rank of major at his discharge in 1946.
Dr. Woodson was in private practice from 1947 to 1985 in Norfolk in neurology and psychiatry.
He was a past president of the Neuropsychiatric Society of Virginia, and a member of the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Neurology, Southern Psychiatric Association, Psychiatric Society of Virginia, Medical Society of Virginia and the Norfolk Academy of Medicine. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, the Ryan Club of Norfolk, the Rotary Club, and the Tidewater Coin Club.
Dr. Woodson was an avid U.Va. sports fan, and loved fishing, golfing, boating, and most importantly his family. His sense of humor and generosity will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Dr. Woodson came to Covington High School annually until three years ago to present the Paul S. Woodson Scholarship to a graduating senior.
He was a loyal reader of the Covington Virginian and the Virginian Review, having subscribed by mail after he left Covington in 1932. He worked the crossword puzzle every day as was one of the oldest, regular readers of the Virginian Review.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Nina Cachelin Woodson of Norfolk, his daughters, Dorita Wood of Charlottesville, Sharon Strassburg and her husband, Dr. David A. Strassburg of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Judy Levin and her husband, Richard, of Norfolk, Melissa Stevens and her husband, Bobby, of Rock Hill, S.C., and his son, Charles Frederick Woodson and his wife, Amy, of Norfolk; two brothers, John Woodson and his wife, Winona, and James Woodson and his wife, Becky, all of Covington; 10 grandchildren, Mark, David, Jennifer, Melissa, Gregory, Eric, Harry, Sara, Tracy and Mackenzie; and seven great-grandchildren; and his special life-long friend, Hope Price.
A funeral mass will be celebrated in Christ the King Catholic Church, Tuesday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Matthais Lusembo will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be sent to Heartland Hospice, Christ the King Catholic Church, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
