RICHMOND (AP) – The National Weather Service says a storm has produced at least two tornadoes in Southside Virginia.
There were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
The weather service said a tornado with maximum winds of 90 mph touched down in Mecklenburg County in Southside Virginia about 3 a.m. Wednesday.
The weather service also confirmed a tornado touched down early Wednesday near the Henry-Pittsylvania county line.
The tornado was about 200 yards wide, had maximum winds of 85 mph and was on the ground intermittently for more than 5 miles, causing minor damage to three homes.
Malcolm Wilson Jr. said he woke up to find a tree in his mother’s yard in the Axton area of Henry County. He said a shed was overturned and his chicken coops were destroyed.
“Before I could even get up to look out the window I started hearing all kinds of noise where it sounded like things were breaking and tearing up,” Wilson said.
Dominion Virginia Power reported more than 1,100 customers in the Richmond area remained without service Thursday.
