Total dominance.
That is the best way to sum up the Alleghany girls basketball team’s 59-22 win over Parry McCluer Wednesday night.
After losing their first three games of the season, including a tough 55-52 loss to rival Covington on Monday, the Lady Mounties took their frustrations out on the Fighting Blues.
Alleghany (1-3) connected on 49 percent (23 for 47) of their shots from the field, while out-rebounding the Blues, 45-11.
“That is not a bad team walking into that locker room,” said Alleghany coach Danny Keene, referring to his group of girls. “We ran into a few buzzsaws early in the season because we are playing stiff competition. It is only going to help us down the road.
“I’m really pleased with the way we played tonight,” added Keene. “I scouted Parry McCluer when they played Rockbridge and they did not look that bad. But we applied a little pressure tonight and that forced them into committing some turnovers and gave us some easy scoring opportunities.”
The Mountaineers led 4-0 just 35 seconds into the game after a Paige Irvine dish to Esther Allman.
Five minutes later, the Mountaineers led 13-4 after Allman returned the favor to Irvine and they led 16-4 following Alissa Morgan’s stickback.
Allman added a steal-and-layup with 21 seconds left to play to give Alleghany an 18-6 lead after the first quarter.
Kristian Wiseman’s dish to Kirsten Burton with 6:49 to play in the first half gave AHS a 22-6 lead and capped a 17-3 run before Parry McCluer’s Whitney Lewis hit the first of her three three-pointers on the night to make the score 22-9.
Allman responded with a three-ball of her own and that jump-started a 31-0 run by the Lady Mountaineers that lasted the entire second quarter and deep into the third quarter.
Allman’s second three-pointer of the game gave AHS a 34-9 lead late in the first half and they led 40-9 following a Mindy Gillispie stickback.
Wiseman’s baseline take with 30 seconds to play in the first half gave Alleghany a 44-9 lead at the half.
An Allman dish to Analea Deeds got the third quarter scoring underway and Gillispie followed with two straight buckets.
Burton knocked down one of two at the line and added a stickback to cap the Lady Mounties 31-0 run and give them a commanding 53-9 lead with 1:28 left to play in the third quarter.
Lewis knocked down her second triple of the night with 1:11 to finally break the Blues scoring silence that lasted 13 minutes and 14 seconds.
Lewis’ three-ball was the first Parry McCluer points since her first three-pointer of the game with 6:25 remaining in the second quarter.
Alleghany led 55-13 after three quarters of play and cruised through the fourth quarter as they held on for their first win of the year, 59-22.
Allman led the Mountaineers with 18 points, while Burton added 14 and eight rebounds. Gillispie finished with 11 points and seven boards.
Lewis led Parry McCluer (2-3) with nine points.
Alleghany (1-3) will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Heritage in the semifinal of the Alcova Mortgage Cougar Basketball Classic at Covington at 6 p.m.
The Alleghany junior varsity opened the night with a 38-21 win in the preliminary.
