Events scheduled this weekend in the Highlands and adjoining communities include the following:

SATURDAY CONCERT: New Valley Four will present a concert Saturday at the Jackson River Sport Complex amphitheatre from 6:30 to 9:30 p. m. The complex is located off of Edgemont Drive near Jackson River Enterprises in Covington. Those attending should bring lawn chairs for seating. There is no charge.

DOUTHAT PARK: Douthat State Park will offer activities for Father’s Day this week end. Papermaking will be offered from 11 a. m. to 12 noon where you can turn trash into treasure to make a special greeting card for dad. Paper will be made by hand. From 1 to 2 p. m. there will be a Memories Workshop. Visitors can make a special gift for dad or bring dad to help with the project. Costs are $20 for a screech owl box; $16 for a butterfly house, or $12 for a bat house. From 3 to 4 p. m. there will be a Stroll in Nature on one of the park’s many trails. All of the activities begin Saturday at the Discovery Center. The beach area, lake, bathhouse and concession stand at Douthat are open from 11 a. m. to 7 p. m. weekdays and from 11 a. m. to 6 p. m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The park has more than 40 miles of wooded hiking trails. For information on park activities call 862-8100.

POOL OPEN: The Covington city pool is open for the season on West Main Street. Hours are Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 p. m., and Sunday, 1 to 6 p. m. Cost is $3 for adults and $2 for 18 and under.

GARTH NEWEL: Garth Newel Music Center in Bath County will host the annual Virginia Blues and Jazz Festival beginning Friday at 7:30 p. m. with Catherine Russell. Saturday’s line-up includes Bert Carlson Quartet, 12:30 p. m.; Honey Island Swamp Band, 1:45 p. m.; Grous Fantasms, 3:15 p. m. and the highlight, five-time Grammy winner, The Robert Cray Band, at 5 p. m. On Sunday the New Orleans Jazz Bunch will perform from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m. For information on the programs and tickets, call 540-839-5018 or visit www. gastrocele.org.

GREENBRIER VALLEY THEATRE: The musical drama “Floyd Collins,” is currently playing at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre in Lewisburg, W. Va. The play is about Floyd Collins, a caver in Kentucky, who became trapped in a cave in 1925. The production is a haunting musical filled with Americana tunes, smart lyrics and true depth. This weekend shows are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p. m. Performances are also scheduled for June 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29 and 30. For information and tickets call toll-free 1-866-888-1411. The theater is located at 113 E. Washington St. in Lewisburg.

DEPOT MUSEUM: The Alleghany Historical Society’s museum in the former C&O passenger station on Maple Avenue in Covington is open Tuesday through Friday from 12 noon to 4 p. m., and 2-4 p. m. Saturday and Sunday. There is no charge to visit the museum. For information call 965-0149.

C&O HERITAGE CENTER: The C&O Heritage Center in Clifton Forge offers exhibits daily on C&O history and has an extensive O gauge model train layout on display. The center is housed in the remodeled Smith Creek Yard Freight Depot off of Main Street. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a. m. to 4 p. m., and Sunday, 1 to 4 p. m. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children between 3 and 12, and children 2 and under free. For information call 862-8653.

GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY: The Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society is located in the former Jeter-Watson school building on Pine Street in Covington. The office is open for research Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a. m. to 3 p. m. The telephone number is 962-1501.

BATH COUNTY MUSEUM: The Bath County Historical Society’s museum in Warm Springs is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. The museum is located on Courthouse Hill. For information call 540-839-2543.

ART CENTER: The Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center is open in Clifton Forge Monday through Saturday from 10 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. at 439 E. Ridgeway Street. For information, call 862-4447.

FARMERS MARKETS: Covington – The Covington Farmers Market on Main Street is open two days each week, Wednesdays, 3-6 p. m., and Saturdays, 8 a. m. to 12 noon. Clifton Forge – The Clifton Forge Farmers Market is open each Friday from 8 a. m. to 1 p. m. It is located behind Northwest True Value Hardware Store. Bath County – The Bath County Farmers Market is open each Saturday on the downtown parking lot in Hot Springs. Hours are 9 a. m. to 1 p. m.
