For the 20th consecutive year, the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council is presenting a children’s theatre residency to allow local youngsters the opportunity to act, dance and sing as well as learning cooperation and team-building with kids from all across the region.
Actor/directors from Missoula Children’s Theatre have been training and directing a merry band of local students as they plan to present an original musical adaptation of the fairytale “Rapunzel” on Saturday.
A zany cast of friends and foes aid Rapunzel’s harrowing escape from the towering imprisonment of Madame Gothel.
With a dash of French flair and pinch of personal triumph and friendship, you have a story audiences won’t soon forget.
Playing double roles as the title character, Rapunzel, are Kirsten Smith and Kara Myers. Hunter Tallman and David Donnan are the Princes, Marly Booth is Madame Gothel, Jacob Yost and Grace McGeoch are Rapunzel’s parents Maurice and Monique.
Whitney Landis, Emma Yost. Katie Burgess and Emily Myers play the Wood Elves. Charlotte Smith, Gabe Miller, Ashley Thompson are the Billy Goats Gruff and Abigail Gibson is The Troll. Steven Thomas will portray Frenchy.
Layla Booth, Haley Balgavy, and Sidney Donnan will play the Ogres. Appearing as the Mushrooms are Allison Jane, Jayden Ryan, and Brody Fox. Jonathan Elmore will serve as accompanist throughout the week.
Rapunzel will be presented as part of the Covington Cork and Pork event this Saturday with two performances in two different locations. The first is at 11 a.m. at the River Rock Amphitheater at the Jackson River Sport Complex on Edgemont Drive, and again at 3 p.m. at the Covington Farmers Market on Main Street. Ad-mission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
The Missoula Children’s Theatre residency is a project of Alleghany Community Theatre and is being underwritten by a grant from The Alleghany Foundation as well as from the Frances P. Rupert Memorial Fund. The Arts Council also receives other support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Alleghany County and the city of Covington.
