RICHMOND – The Bath County volleyball team traveled to Richmond this past weekend to participate in the 2010 Virginia Volleyball Showcase Tournament.

The tournament was set up with a round-robin format on Friday and Saturday morning.

The top two teams out of each pool advance to a double elimination tournament in which the Lady Chargers took second to Group AAA’s Lake Braddock by just a set.

The Lady Chargers second out of 16 teams in four different pools.

In round-robin play, each match was just three sets and when the double-elimination tournament began it changed to the best 2-of-3 set format.

The Lady Chargers opened play Friday with wins over AAA schools Annandale and Matoaca.

The Lady Chargers knocked Annandale off 24-15, 25-19, 24-25.
Amelia Walters led the Bath County with 11 kills, while Amanda Shifflett added eight and Ashley Rice contributed three.

In their second match against Matoaca, BC defeated the Warriors 25-11, 25-9, 25-15.

Shifflett led the Chargers with seven kills, while Walters and Jordan Fry contributed six kills each.

Katie Rice added four kills and sister Ashley chipped in three kills.

Bath County needed to win just two of the three sets in their final round-robin match against James River (Midlothian) and defeated the Rapids 25-21, 25-23, 32-30.

The Chargers banged out 30 kills in the match with Walters and Shifflett leading the way with 12 each.

Rice finished with 30 assists in the victory.

In their semifinal match against Group AAA’s Chantilly High School, Bath would drop the first set 25-21 before rebounding to win the next two sets 25-22, 16-14 to advance to the title match.

Walters banged out 10 kills in the semifinal win, while Shifflett added eight.

In the championship match against Lake Braddock, Bath County took the first set 25-18 before the Bruins rebounded to take the next two sets 26-24, 16-14.

Shifflett led the Chargers with 11 kills, while Walters added 10.

Bath County (6-1) is back in action tonight as they make the trip down the mountain to Valley Ridge to take on the Alleghany Mountaineers, who are coming off a huge come-from-behind win over Stuarts Draft last Thursday.

Action is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the JV match.
