Mrs. Thelma Christine Childs Smith, 77, of 1505 Greenlawn Avenue, died Monday, September 13, 2010, at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Luther Smith in 2000.

Mrs. Smith was born June 26, 1933 in Beckley, W.Va., the daughter of the late Roy Lynn Childs and Emma Davis Childs-Wright and was reared in the home of her grandmother, Mandy Tucker Childs and William Robert Childs.

She was a lifetime resident of this community and attended First Christian Church and Faith Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Covington Lodge No. 610 L.O.O.M., enjoyed shopping and playing bingo but most of all, she enjoyed being with her family and was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, James Leroy “Tinker” Smith and wife, Martha of Gainesville, Richard Darryl Cranford and wife, Virginia of Manassas; two daughters, Patricia Cranford Tucker of Covington, Sandy Cranford Caldwell and husband, Bill of Covington; six grandchildren, Shannon Dawn Daugherty and husband, Patrick, Nolan Edward Caldwell and wife, Kelly, Carrie Renee Willey and husband, Tye, Christy Snead McGann and husband, Jeremy, Michael Warren Snead Jr. and wife, Jin, Jeremy Scott Cranford and wife, Crystal; 14 great-grandchildren, Emily Paige Daugherty, Hunter Patrick Daugherty, Trevor Shane Daugherty, Kennedy Renee Willey, Gavin Tye Willey, Kayla Dove Cranford, Kelsey Smith, Kierstin Paige Mundy, Talan Michael McGann, Trent Michael Snead, Rylee Aurora Snead, Summer Lorraine Snead, Alivia Dawn Morgan, Kole Kellan Caldwell; three brothers, Wayne Wright and wife, Vickie of Baltimore, Md., Jim Wright and wife, Linda of Baltimore, Md., Lyle Fox of Beckley, W.Va.; three sisters, Shirley Simonds of Andrews, N.C., Wanda Ransom and husband, Robert of Cool Ridge, W.Va., Carol Cutsail and husband, Donald of Baltimore, Md.; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins including, Judy, Sylvia and Loretta from Florida; and a special friend, Linda “Pete” Wright.

In addition to her parents, Roy Lynn Childs and Emma Davis Childs-Wright and her husband, James Luther Smith, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, the Rev. Jack Simonds.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Price officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bill Gilliland.

Interment will follow in Lone Star Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 1505 Greenlawn Avenue, Covington.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.
