Covington Fire Department Activity Report

The following is an activity report for the Covington Fire Department for the month of August.

During the month, the department responded to 25 calls for service.

Of those, all 16 were calls within the city of Covington, while 9 were located in Alleghany County.

Firefighters logged 125 miles and 144 hours while responding to calls for service in the city.

Firefighters logged 261 miles and 214 hours while responding to calls for service in the county.

Command units responded on an average of two minutes, 41 seconds during the month, and arrived on the scene on an average of six minutes.

Responding apparatus marked en-route to calls on an average of five minutes, 57 seconds and arrived on the scene on an average of nine.

Of the calls received during the month, seven were miscellaneous calls, there were five motor-vehicle accidents, five hazardous materials call, four mutual aid calls, three false alarms, and one structure fire.

An average of 13 firefighters responded to calls during the month.

The following is a summary of calls received during the month:

Call 146 – Sun., Aug. 1, 1:50 a.m. The department was called to the area across from 900 Valley Ridge Rd. for a report of a motor vehicle. No vehicle was found at the scene. Ten firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 147 – Mon., Aug. 2, 1:11 p.m. The department was called to assist the Covington Rescue Squad at the Budget Inn on Monroe Ave. Nine firefighters responded.

Call 148 – Tues., Aug. 3, 9:41 a.m. The department was called to Horse Mountain View and Mallow Rd. for a ruptured gas line. Ten firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 149 – Tues., Aug. 3, 12:31 p.m. The department was called to assist the Covington Rescue Squad at 420 Merry Lane. Three firefighters responded.

Call 150 – Wed., Aug. 4, 3:04 p.m. The department was called to the Stop In at 1410 Durant Rd. for a gasoline spill. Thirteen firefighters and two pieces of equipment responded.

Call 151 – Thurs., Aug. 5, 12:22 p.m. The department was called to 107 N. Wills Ave. for a possible natural gas leak. Thirteen firefighters and two pieces of equipment responded.

Call 152 – Thurs., Aug. 5, 4:10 p.m. The department was called to 2014 S. Clark Ave. for a downed electric line. Eighteen firefighters and four pieces of equipment responded.

Call 153 – Thurs., Aug. 5, 5:18 p.m. The department was called to the intersection of Alleghany Ave. and Fudge St. for a downed power line. Seventeen firefighters and two pieces of equipment responded.

Call 154 – Thurs., Aug. 5, 10:59 p.m. The department was called to the Shell Station on Monroe Ave. for a gasoline spill. Fourteen firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 155 – Sun., Aug. 8, 7:28 a.m. The department was called to 311 S. Monroe Ave. for a fire alarm activation. Nothing was found. Fourteen firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 156 – Sun., Aug. 8, 9:38 p.m. The department was called to the Western Sizzlin’ parking lot on Valley Ridge Rd. for a motor-vehicle accident. Twenty members and four pieces of equipment responded.

Call 157 – Mon, Aug. 9, 12:55 p.m. The department was called to the intersection of Alleghany Ave. and Fudge St. for a power line on fire. Fourteen firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 158 – Fri., Aug. 13, 9:14 p.m. The department was called to 116 E. Walnut St. for a report of smoke. It was found to be caused from an outdoor wood stove. Ten firefighters and two pieces of equipment responded.

Call 159 – Sat., Aug. 14, 3:11 p.m. The department was called to 808 N. Beverly Ave. for candle paper on fire. Eight firefighters and two pieces of equipment responded.

Call 160 – Sun., Aug. 15, 2:11 a.m. The department was called to 105 S. Monroe Ave., Apt. D for a fire. The fire was caused by an undetermined source. Nineteen firefighters and six pieces of equipment responded.

Call 161 – Wed., Aug. 18, 1:31 a.m. The department was called to the front of 307 Thacker Dr. for a motor-vehicle accident. Fourteen firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 162 – Wed., Aug. 18, 11:46 a.m. The department was called to the intersection of Chestnut St. and Highland Ave. for a hydraulic line leak. Fourteen firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 163 – Fri., Aug. 20, 6:36 a.m. The department was called to assist the Dunlap Fire Department at a tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 64, mile marker five in the westbound lane. Twelve firefighters and five pieces of equipment responded.

Call 164 – Fri., Aug. 20, 5:10 p.m. The department was called to in front of 421 W. Riverside St. for a motor-vehicle accident. Seven firefighters and two pieces of equipment responded.

Call 165 – Sat., Aug. 21, 8:52 p.m. The department was called to 412 Winding Way for a controlled burn that got out of hand. Fifteen firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 166 – Mon., Aug. 23, 2:43 a.m. The department was called to assist the Dunlap Fire Department at a structure fire at 5408 Ogles Creek Rd. Thirteen firefighters and two pieces of equipment responded.

Call 167 – Tues., Aug. 24, 11:26 p.m. The department was called to Interstate 64, mile marker 18, for a motor-vehicle accident. Seventeen firefighters and five pieces of equipment responded.

Call 168 – Thurs,. Aug. 26, 9:28 a.m. The department was called to Edgemont Primary School for a fire alarm activation. This turned out to be a fire drill, which Covington Emergency Dispatch was not notified about ahead of time. Three firefighters responded.

Call 169 – Sat., Aug. 28, 4:23 p.m. The department was called to 3903 Potts Creek Rd. for fire alarm activation. No fire was found. Eleven firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.

Call 170 – Mon., Aug. 30, 11:00 p.m. The department was called to Interstate 64 at Exit 16B for a diesel spill. Thirteen firefighters and three pieces of equipment responded.
