WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) – An Ohio County health official says West Virginia’s use of bait containing rabies vaccine has kept the number of cases down in the state.
Aerial drops of the bait were scheduled to begin Monday across the state.
The baits are covered with fish meal and are eaten by raccoons and other wildlife.
Ohio County health department Administrator Howard Gamble says there have been 90 rabies cases in West Virginia during the past five years. Without the bait drops, Gamble says the number would be higher and there probably would be more human exposure to the disease.
