Get into the swing with fall programs at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA.

The YMCA will be offering a number of programs that include:

Youth Gymnastics

The Alleghany Highlands YMCA will be offering six-week sessions of beginner and intermediate youth gymnastics for ages 5-11.

The sessions will be Sept. 3-Oct. 10 and Oct. 15-Nov. 21.

John, Michelle and John Jr. Reed will be focusing on both skills and progressions for tumbling, bars, beam and vault.

Beginners ages 8-11 will meet on Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30 p.m., and beginners ages 5-7 on Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Intermediate classes for ages 5-11 will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30-8:30 p.m.

The Y Member fee per six week session is $30 for beginners and $45 for intermediates. The Non-Member fee is $50 for beginners and $65 for intermediates.

Martial Arts

The Alleghany Highlands YMCA will be offering a martial arts class for all ages.

Taught by Clay Johnson, the class is a refined program based on teachings of Karate, Muay Thai and Jeet Kune DO that will expand any martial art student’s skill level.

Beginning Sept. 9, it will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

The Y Member fee is $15 and the Non-Member fee is $55 per month.

School Enrichment

Joey Crawford, a faculty member of Millboro Elementary School, offers a six-week evening school enrichment program on Wednesdays, Oct. 2 through Nov. 6, at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA.

This program is designed to give fourth through sixth graders a boost for the year’s SOLs. The program will offer adaptive and accessible strategies to motivate learning and will also utilize the Stride Academy software program.

Parents are asked to complete a questionnaire about their child’s needs and interests. The Y Member fee is $40 and the Non-Member fee is $60. The class limit is five students.

Guitar

The Alleghany Highlands YMCA is offering guitar lessons instructed by Ashley McClung for ages six and up on Mondays from Sept.9 through Oct. 14.

The Y Member fee is $50 and the Non-Member fee is $70.

Alleghany Highlands
Dolphins Swim Team

If your child can swim at least a length of the pool on his or her front and back with overhand arm recovery, consider the YMCA Swim Team as a great fall and winter opportunity for exercise and personal accomplishment.

Practices will begin Sept. 30 and coaches will make group assignments based on competitive swimming abilities. Participants must be an Alleghany Highlands YMCA member.

Practice times and fees:

Group A will meet Monday and Friday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Fee: $140

Group B will meet Monday and Friday from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Fee: $140

Group C will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Fee: $170.

Group D will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. Fee: $170.

Middle School Madness
and Saturday Nite Frenzy

The Y offers open gym and swim for area youth in grades 4 through 8 on Saturday evenings throughout the school year. Activities include swimming, ping pong, board and Wii games, basketball, volleyball and group exercise classes such as Zumba.

This year, the Y will offer Pickleball as a new activity for participants.

Fall dates for the 4th–5th grade Saturday Nite Frenzy are Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Nov. 23 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Dates for the 6th-8th grade Middle School Madness event are Sept. 28, Oct. 19 and Nov. 16 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Entry fee is $5 and concessions will be available for additional purchase.

Participants should bring their swim suit, towel and lock if they plan to swim.

Parents who wish to volunteer should contact the Y at 962-9622.

All programs will be conducted at the Y’s Wellness Center, located at 101 YMCA Way. Class registration forms may be downloaded from the Y’s website under ‘forms’ at www.alleghanyhighlandsymca.org.

A variety of group exercise classes are also offered to YMCA members with no additional charge and listings are available from the front desk, on the Y’s website, or through the Alleghany Highlands YMCA mobile app.
