Total Action Against Poverty will hold a grand opening Tuesday for its new child development center in Covington.
The center is located at Edgemont Primary School on West Indian Valley Road. The grand opening will be from 6 to 7 p.m.
Tours will be given of classrooms and remarks will be made by local officials, including Covington City Councilwoman Stephanie Clark and School Superintendent Tom Long.
TAP will provide child care at the center through its Head Start Program.
Care and education will be provided to income-eligible children. It will also provide comprehensive health and family services to enrolled children and their families.
In November 2009, TAP Head Start was awarded a two-year $3.1 million grant through the federal Economic Recovery Act to expand Early Head Start services for infants, toddlers, pregnant women and their families.
In the Alleghany Highlands, the grant helped enable TAP to establish two new infant/toddler classrooms, home-based services for infants and toddlers, and support services for pregnant women.
As part of the initiative, TAP Head Start also established a new pre-school classroom for three-year-olds at Edgemont Primary. The program now serves 53 pre-schoolers, infants and toddlers in the Highlands, along with three expectant mothers.
“TAP Head Start is so excited to be able to expand our services to young children and their families in the Alleghany Highlands. Through this expansion, we have significantly increased the number of children and families we can help by providing high-quality, full-day, full-year education and care to some of our most valuable citizens,” said Selena Childress-Mayo, TAP Head Start director. “This expansion would not have been possible without the collaboration of Covington City Public Schools, who shared our vision and our commitment to high-quality education for all children. We are delighted that Edgemont Primary School has generously agreed to share some of their beautiful new space with us and are so proud of what years of hoping and planning have produced.”
