LEXINGTON – Conservation Partners LLC and the Virginia Department of Forestry will host a presentation for forest and farm landowners in the Alleghany Highlands interested in learning more about conservation easement donations and the potential benefits associated with permanently protecting rural land from development.
The Land Conservation Easement Workshop will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13, starting with refreshments at 7 p.m. followed by the 7:15 presentation. The workshop will be held at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge, in Room 502 of McCarthy Hall.
This free educational event will help explain to landowners the purpose, process, and benefits of placing a conservation easement on their property. Other conservation organizations have been invited to be on hand to also share their knowledge and experience during the question and answer session following the presentation. Materials and instructional DVDs will be available to take home.
Presentation speakers will include Taylor Cole, president of Conservation Partners LLC, explaining the fundamentals of land conservation easement donations and potential benefits; and Beth Burnam, Forest Conservation Specialist with the Virginia Department of Forestry, describing DOF’s easement process.
Conservation easements enable landowners to permanently protect their property, generally farm or forestland, from future development while retaining many other rights including residential living, farming, forestry, hunting and other traditional private land uses.
Potential tax incentives include an estate tax reduction and exclusion, a federal income tax deduction, and a Virginia state income tax credit that can be sold.
Landowners and others interested in learning more about land conservation easements in Virginia are encouraged to attend. It is a free event.
