Mr. Woodrow Murray Young, Sr., age 99, of Covington, died Thursday, September 5, 2013, at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, Low Moor.  

He was the husband of the late Virginia Via Young.

Mr. Young was born April 10, 1914 in Maben, W.Va., located in the Wyoming County section of the state, the son of the late Otho Wilson Young and Annie Haymaker Young.  

He was employed as a foreman in the loading department of Westvaco for 48 years, retiring in 1979.  Mr. Young was a former member of the Local 675 AFL-CIO United Paperworkers.  He was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served his church as a former deacon for a number of years and was a former member of the choir.  

Murray was a life member and past governor of Covington Lodge No. 610 L.O.O.M.

Mr. Young is survived by one son, W. Murray “Buddy” Young, Jr. and wife Margie, of Covington; one daughter-in-law, Kay Dawson Young; three grandchildren Michael T. Young and wife, Brigette, Kevin W. Young and wife, Kimberly and Reneé Young Gann and fiancé, Glen Fink; seven great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; one brother, Jack N. Young of Tucson, Ariz.; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Bi Plasters.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Young was preceded in death by one son, Donald L. Young on April 12, 2002; two brothers, Percy Young and Homer Young; and one sister, Leona Young Burks.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 8, at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael C. Fleenor officiating.  

Entombment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Michael Young, Kevin Young, Kevin Scott Young, Daniel Miller, Erik Young, and members of his church family, Larry Deacon, Burton Parker, and Ed Gibson.  

Honorary pallbearers will be O.E. Parker, Jr., Eddie Williams and Dennis Vess.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.at Loving Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 801 N. Rockbridge, Covington.

The family suggests that memorial tributes be made to the McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church Roof Fund, 900 N. Alleghany Avenue, Covington, Va., 24426 or Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va., 24422.
