There is no charge to list upcoming events, however, other than ongoing meetings, items are limited to no more than two weeks before the event. Church items are limited to benefits, dinners and yard or bake sales and are published only during the week of the event. Non-profit group yard and bake sales and family reunions and open houses are also published only during the week the event is being held.

Wednesday, Aug. 21
OR Retirees: The Operating Room Retirees will meet at 12 p.m. at the restaurant in Douthat State Park

Retired Nurses: The Retired Nurses will meet for lunch at 1 p.m. at The Red Caboose in Clifton Forge.

Thursday, Aug. 22
Democratic Party Picnic: The Alleghany County-Covington-Clifton Forge Democratic Picnic will be held from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Vepco Picnic Shelter behind the Alleghany County Governmental Complex. Cost is $5, members should bring covered dish or dessert.  

Friday, Aug. 23
Book Signing: John Rose, author of the comic strip, “Barney Google and Snuffy Smith,” which appears in over 900 newspapers and a native of the Highlands, will hold book signing at the office  of the Virginian Review on Maple Avenue. He will have copies of the book for sale.  

Sunday, Aug. 25
Persinger-Smith Reunion: The Persinger-Smith reunion will be held at the Covington Moose Park, beginning at 2 p.m. Bring covered dish and drinks.

Monday, Aug. 26
ACHS Class of 1973: The Alleghany County High School Class of 1973 Reunion Committee will meet at Cucci’s at 6:30 p.m. The reunion will be held Aug. 31. For information or to place a reservation, call 529-0831 or 969-8221.
