Herscher, Oliver Post Pioneer Wins

MONTEREY — Bath County’s Sydney Herscher and Derek Oliver picked up cross country victories at a three-team event hosted by Highland County High School Wednesday.

Herscher posted a time of 29:00 to beat out Ram Grace Blanchard in the girls race, while Oliver, who ran a 22:54, led a 1-2-3 Charger finish in the boys race.

Christian Heffler placed second, while Conner Ailstock finished third.

Highland County topped Covington in the boys team competition 20-37. Bath County didn’t field a complete team.

Highlands was the only school to field a girls team.

Covington was led by Holden Broughman’s fifth place finish in the boys race (24:45) and by Naomi Karnes and Grace Lyons in the girls race, both posting a time of 31:22.

Both the Cougars and Chargers will run next Wednesday at James River.
