NEW CASTLE  —  The Pioneer District cross country teams got in their last regular season tune-up Wednesday at Fenwick Mines.

James River won the girls race, while Western Gate Conference 45 member Bland County captured the boys race in the meet, hosted by Craig County High School.

Covington’s Trevor McLaughlin (6th place) and Tiffany Burr (8th place) were the top local runners.

“Trevor has established himself as our No. 1 boys runner, cutting 51 seconds off his best time,” said CHS coach Ray Sullins. “Tiffany is our No. 1 girls runner, cutting almost two minutes off her best time.

“Tyler Baker, Brian Clemons, Grace Lyons and Naomi Karnes all cut at least a minute off their times,” he added. “We ran great Wednesday, but we have to keep improving as we move into district and conference (meets) if we want to keep advancing.”

Bath County was paced by Sydney Herscher, who placed 11th in the girls field and Christian Heffler, who finished 8th in the boys race.

Both Covington and Bath County will be back in action on Wednesday at the Pioneer District championships at Highland County.

The first Western Gate Conference 45 championship meet will be held on Wednesday, October 30 at Eastern Montgomery High School.
