There is no charge to list upcoming events, however, other than ongoing meetings, items are limited to no more than two weeks before the event. Church items are limited to benefits, dinners and yard or bake sales. Non-profit group yard and bake sales and family reunions and open houses are also published.

Tuesday, October 1
Suppertime: Suppertime at Granbery will be held at 4:45 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. with ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, glazed apples, dessert, drink, $7.

Wednesday, October 2
Children’s Story Hour: Children’s Story Hour will resume at the C.P.. Jones Library in Covington at 10:30 a.m.

Women’s Job Club: A Women’s Job Club will begin meeting twice a month at the Charles P. Jones Memorial Library in Covington. The initial meeting will be held at 2 p.m. The club will meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Thursday, October 3
Masons: Covington Masonic Lodge No. 171 AF&AM will hold a stated communication at the lodge on Dolly Ann Drive at 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Retirees: The Unbleached Pulpmill Retirees will gather for dinner at 4 p.m at Western Sizzlin.

Friday, October 4
Flea Market: There will be a flea market and bake sale from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Sweet Springs Rescue Building in Sweet Springs, W.Va. There is a $10 setup fee. Call 340-536-1559 or 304-536-3190.

Salvation Army Bag Sale: The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Covington will hold a bag sale Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bags filled with clothing and shoes will be $5.

Book Sale: The Friends of the Clifton Forge Public Library will hold its fall book sale Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Saturday, October 5
Pancakes: There will be an all you can eat pancake breakfast at Applebee’s from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. to benefit the campaign to elect Sarah Patton president of the Virginia Education Association. Cost is $5 per adult, $2.50 for children 10 and under.

VFW Pancake Breakfast: Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033 will sponsor an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. The event will be  held at the VFW Post on Dolly Ann Drive. The breakfast will feature pancakes and buckwheats, sausage, orange juice, coffee and milk. Tickets are $5 each. The price for children 10 and under is $3. Tickets will be available at the door.  

Church Clothing Giveaway:  Covington Church of Christ, 1643 S. Carpenter Dr., will hold a clothing giveaway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.     

Tea Party: There will be a tea party for area boys and girls at 10 a.m. with Donna Loan at the Clifton Forge Public Library. Call the library at 863-2519.

Apple Butter Festival : Iron Gate Baptist Church will hold its fall Apple Butter Festival from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. with music throughout the day and games and inflatables for children.

Sunday, October 6
Historical Presentation: Al Kresse will present a program at Covington City Hall entitled: “Retracing the Potts Creek Branch from Covington to Jordan to Bess.” The presentation will begin at 2 p.m. and it will be co-sponsored by the Alleghany Highlands and C&O Historical Societies.

Bingo: There will be a 31, pick your own prize Bingo at Covington Moose Lodge. Doors open at 1 p.m., play begins at 2 p.m. Cards one for $10 or four for $25, with a special at the door to benefit Dee Dee Simpson. Proceeds benefit Covington Varsity Girls Basketball trip to Florida. Food available for sale.
