WARM SPRINGS — Most cooks have a range of tools at their disposal: food processors, good knives, measuring cups and the all-purpose mixing bowl.

So when organizers received the book title nomination “The Mixing Bowl,” they knew the winning entry had been submitted.

And so, at the recent award ceremony for the Bath County Harvest Moon Festival, organizers congratulated Margo Oxendine for her winning title nomination for Bath County’s community cookbook.

“We felt ‘The Mixing Bowl’ was the perfect title,” explained Maggie Anderson, director of tourism and economic development for Bath County. “Not only is the mixing bowl an essential cooks tool, but it is a metaphor for bringing together diverse peoples, cultures and experiences.

“We see this community cookbook as kind of a mixing bowl as we mix together stories from both our history and the present, recipes from locals as well as visitors,” Anderson added.

The “Name the Cookbook Contest,” was launched the first week in June at the Bath County Farmers Mar-ket.

The prize for naming the cookbook was a cooking themed gift basket (in this case a colander) filled with cooking utensils and goodies. In addition, the winner will receive a complimentary copy of the cookbook.

“Now the real work begins,” noted Anderson.  “We will be gathering recipes for the next several months. We are asking everyone to look through their recipes and send their favorites to us.”

Recipes can be submitted in several ways.  They can be submitted online at DiscoverBath.com/cookbook   Individuals can bring copies of their recipes to the Bath County Courthouse (Room 220) or the Bath County Chamber of Commerce and staff will copy them.
Folks are also welcome to mail copies of their recipes (along with any advice or suggestions on how to serve or enjoy the dish) to Attn:  Recipes, P.O. Box 309, Warm Springs, Va. 24484.

“We are also interested in anecdotes about the recipes,” explained Anderson. “If you have a story about the recipe like, ‘This was Grandma’s Christmas stew,’ or ‘This is what we always serve at hunting season,’ we want to know that too,” Anderson concluded.

“The Mixing Bowl” the County of Bath Community Cookbook is slated for completion in the spring.

For further information on how to submit recipes call Maggie Anderson or Celine Finel at (540) 839-7202.
