Brenda Seyglinksi Tate has been named the 2013 Outstanding Alumni at Covington High School.

Tate received the award Friday night during halftime festivities of Coving-ton’s Homecoming football game against Summers County.

“It just doesn’t seem fair that someone who did what they loved for 41 years should get this,” she said as she accepted the award.

Tate graduated from Covington High School in 1966.

As a senior at CHS, she was an honor graduate with distinction in English and Government. She was president of both the Beta Club and the Spanish Club.

After graduating from CHS, she furthered her education at the College of William and Mary, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in History and a master of arts degree in Education, with an emphasis in Social Studies.

Upon completion of her graduate studies from the College of William and Mary, she became a social studies teacher at CHS, where her teaching career spanned 41 years.

While at CHS, Tate taught World Geography, World History, U.S. History, Government, Advanced Placement U.S. History and Advanced Placement Government.

In addition to teaching, she served as the Academic/Scholastic Team sponsor, the Pep Club sponsor and Senior sponsor.

“Throughout her teaching career, she impacted many students’ lives and imparted an infinite amount of knowledge and compassion to her students,” said Brenda Clark of the CHS Alumni Association. “Brenda was a true asset to Covington School.”

Tate’s classroom, Room 201, has been officially renamed “The Tate Room.”

Tate has one daughter, Dr. Jessica Amelia Tate. Jessica, also a graduate of Covington High School, was valedictorian of the Class of 2000. She also attended the College of William and Mary and West Virginia Univer-sity.

Jessica is a doctor of Neurology, practicing at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Since retiring, Tate has made frequent trips to North Carolina to visit Jes-sica, her husband, David, and grandson, Garrett.
