William “Bill” McCarthy

William L. McCarthy Jr. 84, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013.
He was the husband of Kathleen (Frances) McCarthy.

Born Thursday, Jan. 3, 1929, in Covington.  William was the son of the late William Leroy McCarthy and Ethel Secrist McCarthy.

In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by a son, William L. McCarthy III (Mack) and his wife, Jean; a granddaughter, Katie McCarthy Watts and her husband, Will; two sisters, Carolyn Dunn and her husband, Dennis, and Sue Larkum; and a brother, Pat McCarthy.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Allyn McCarthy.

Bill proudly served our country as a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended Augusta Military Academy and Virginia Tech. Bill and Frances were married on July 23, 1952 in Covington.  Bill worked for Dominion Power (VEPCO) for 36 years and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Jamie Pharr officiating.  

A reception for friends and family followed at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Best Western, 820 E. Madison St., Covington.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay St., Lynchburg, Va. 24504, (www.holycrosslynchburg.org), or your favorite charity.

Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Lynchburg is handling arrangements (434-237-9424).

Condolences may be registered online by visiting www.tharpfuneralhome.com.
Local arrangements are being handled by Loving Funeral Home, Covington, www.lovingfuneralhom1913.com.
