The Alleghany Mountaineer girls were in control Tuesday night.
Senior setter Savanna Herr had six kills to go with 16 assists and three aces, leading the hosts to a dominating three-set Blue Ridge District win over Staunton River 25-16, 25-19, 25-14.
“We have the talent,” said AHS coach Tara Uzzell. “It’s all about just getting things to click.”
You could hear the click on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers led from start to finish in set one and scored eight straight behind Herr’s serving and Latisha Chambers’ four kills in the second.
In the third, Uzzell changed up her line-up and the group responded by putting away the match.
Alleghany went on a 10-2 scoring run midway through the set. The spurt included kills from Allie Morgan, Herr, Cristen Walton, Chambers and Morganne Durham.
“Everybody played,” Uzzell said. “You look out there in the third set and there is just one senior on the floor.”
Chambers had a team-high 10 kills to lead the Mountaineer hitters, while Morgan joined Herr with six each
“Savanna played well,” said Uzzell. “I really have to give her props because sometimes the setter gets no glory. She stepped up and had a very good game tonight.”
The Mountaineers were tied for fifth with William Byrd in the Conference 31 standings entering Tuesday play.
Alleghany travels to Rockbridge County on Thursday.
The Mountaineer jayvees started the night with a straight set 25-23, 26-24 victory.
