Both the Covington Cougars and Bath County Chargers will advance to the Virginia High School League playoffs next week.
The Cougars, who finished a 7-3 regular season with a 42-7 win over Bath County Friday night, will enter the Group A West playoffs as the sixth seed and will likely host No. 11 Northwood next week at Casey Field.
Things are a little muddled for Bath County, though. The 5-5 Chargers are a likely 14th seed and will hit the road, but their destination has yet to be decided.
Honaker, Fort Chiswell and Haysi all ended the regular season with identical points ratings, so those seeds are still up in the air, but one of them will likely face the Chargers
Meanwhile despite a 30-9 win over the Staunton River Golden Eagles Friday night, the 4-6 Alleghany Mountaineers failed to qualify for the Group AAA West playoffs.
Out of the Blue Ridge District, however, the William Byrd Terriers, the Lord Botetourt Cavaliers and the Northside Vikings will all host first-round playoff games next week. Thanks to William Byrd’s 14-7 win over the previously unbeaten Cavaliers, these powerhouses ended the regular season in a three-way tie atop the Blue Ridge standings.
Other Pioneer District teams also qualified for the playoffs.
The James River Knights are an 11-seed in Group AA and will likely travel to Buckingham next week, while Parry McCluer has qualified for the Group A East playoffs.
These playoff scenarios are unofficial at this point. Official pairings will be released Monday.
