TROUTVILLE – The brutal early season schedule continued for the Covington softball team Saturday.
The Cougars lost decisions to Lord Botetourt (17-4) and Liberty (10-0) at the Botetourt Bash Tournament, held at the Botetourt Sports Complex.
“We gained a lot of experience in this tournament against good teams,” said CHS coach Leigh Ann Woodward. “And I think we have made improvements.”
Autumn Phillips had a big day at the plate for Covington.
Phillips had all three of the hits for the Cougars on the day, including a grand slam home run in the fourth inning against Lord Botetourt.
The senior had two hits in the loss to the Cavaliers and Covington’s lone hit against Liberty, who won the Red Division of the tournament.
Kristina Huffman started both games in the circle, working three innings in both games.
Dakota Botkin tossed two innings of relief against Lord Botetourt and three innings against Liberty.
The Cougars are now 0-4, with all four losses coming against Group AA teams.
“Kristina and Dakota are getting a lot of pitching experience,” said Woodward. “I think we have a made of few steps of improvement every game.”
