March Cases Heard In Circuit Court

Cases heard in March in Alleghany County Circuit Court, with prosecution overseen by the office of Ed Stein, commonwealth’s attorney for Alleghany County and Covington.

March 13 Hearing

Robert G. Shanks, Asher, Ky., was found guilty to failure to move over for an emergency vehicle. The offense date was July 28, 2013. Shanks had appealed the case from Alleghany County General District Court. The appeal was withdrawn. Shanks was fined $75 and $141 costs.

March 17 Hearing

Christina Shaffer Taylor, Covington, was sentenced on two  counts  of larceny of less than $200 through welfare fraud. The offense date was Oct. 19, 2010. Taylor entered a guilty plea in circuit court Aug. 24, 2011. The court deferred disposition of the case. She was sentenced to 120 days in jail, suspended, and placed on un supervised probation for two years. The court assessed $494 costs and ordered Taylor to pay $5,017.16 restitution.

March 20 Hearings

April Nacole Wright, Covington, was found guilty of violating probation. The violation occurred Feb. 26, 2014. Wright’s probation was revoked. She was placed under indefinite supervision by a probation officer and ordered to report to a Virginia Department of Corrections Detention Center. She was ordered to pay $711 costs.   

David Wayne Thurston Jr., Covington, pled guilty to entering dwelling house with intent to commit murder, rape, robbery or arson, arson of an unoccupied building with damage totaling $200 or more, grand larceny involving $200 or more, and possession of  gun within 10 years of being convicted of a non-violent felony.
The offenses occurred May 15, 2013. Thurston was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with five years suspended. He will be placed on three years supervised probation following release from custody. The court assessed $4,805.80 costs and ordered Thurston to pay $12,000 restitution.

Samantha Nicole Cook, Covington, pled guilty to one count of larceny through obtaining a credit card number and six counts of credit card forgery. The offenses occurred July 27, 2013. The court deferred sentencing Cook until a pre-sentencing report is filed by a probation officer.

Scottie Ray Peake, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., pled guilty to receiving/buying stolen goods valued at less than $200. The offense date was Oct. 29, 2013. Peake was sentenced to 12 months in jail, suspended, and assessed $607 costs. She was placed on unsupervised probation for one year.

Shaniece D. King, Roanoke, pled guilty to 10 counts of check forgery and 10 counts of uttering a forged check.  The offense dates were Aug. 3, 2013; Aug. 10, 2013. King was sentenced to a total of 10 years in jail, with nine years suspended. Following release from custody, she will be placed on three years supervised probation. The court assessed $10,085 costs and ordered King to pay $25,511.20 restitution.

Ricky Lynn Morrison, Ansted, W.Va., pled guilty to unlawfully obtaining Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle documents. The offense date was Aug. 8, 2013. Morrison was sentenced to 12 months in jail, suspended, and placed on unsupervised probation for one year. He was assessed $809 costs.

Timothy McCoy, Covington, pled guilty to larceny of $200 or more through welfare fraud. The offense date was Aug. 2, 2013. The court took the case under advisement. McCoy was ordered to pay $339 restitution.

Amanda L. Muncey, Covington, pled guilty to one count of larceny through obtaining a credit card number, four counts of credit card forgery and contempt of court for failure to appear. The offense dates were July 27, 2013; July 29, 2013; March 20, 2013. Muncey was sentenced to a total of three years in jail, suspended, and placed on two years supervised probation. She was fined $50 and assessed $3,410 costs.

March 26 Hearings

Brian Keith Jamison, Covington, pled guilty to contempt of court. The offense date was Oct. 15, 2010. Jamison was credited for time served and assessed $100 costs.

Trevor Allen Brown, Covington, was sentenced on the charge of entering a dwelling house with intent to commit murder, rape, robbery or arson. The offense date was Dec. 24, 2012. He was sentenced to six years in prison, suspended, and placed on supervised probation for five years. Brown was ordered to participate in the Virginia department of Corrections’ Community Diversion Center program. The court assessed $825 costs.

Brian Paul Joseph McDermott, Richwood, W.Va., pled guilty to unlawful possession of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle documents. The offense occurred May 16, 2011. McDermott was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended, and placed on unsupervised probation for one year. The court assessed $495 costs.

Heather Dawn Hiser, Lewisburg, W.Va., pled guilty to possession of a Schedule II drug with intent to distribute and possession of a Schedule III drug with intent to distribute. The offense dates were Aug. 21, 2012; Sept. 5, 2012. Hiser was sentenced to six years in prison, suspended, and placed on three years supervised probation. The court assessed $1,663.89 costs and ordered Hiser to pay $400 restitution. Her driver’s license was suspended for one year.

Ravelle Y. Alexander, Clifton Forge, pled guilty to assault and battery. The offense date was May 28, 2013. Alexander was originally charged with malicious wounding. She was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended, and placed on unsupervised probation for one year. The court assessed $383.98 costs.

Susan Darlene Johnson, Covington, pled guilty to possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, with intent to distribute. The offense date was Oct. 6, 2013. She was sentenced to one year in jail, suspended, and placed on supervised probation for one year. The court assessed $881.50 costs and suspended Johnson’s driver’s license for six months.

Sarah K. Marrazo, Covington, pled guilty to embezzlement of less than $200. The offense date was Oct. 14, 2013. Marrazo was originally charged with embezzlement involving $200 or more. She was sentenced to one year in jail, suspended, and placed on unsupervised probation for one year. The court assessed $812 costs and ordered Marrazo to pay $380 restitution.
