Built in Roanoke in 1950, the Class J No. 611 remains a proud symbol of our railroad legacy. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, I had the privilege of presenting a Congressional Record plaque to Mendy Flynn at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

The Alleghany Highlands Arts Council has announced the lineup for its 2014-15 Performing Arts Series season.

The season will open on Wednesday, Oct. 15, with a special performance by the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors.

The Jazz Ambassadors, also known as “America’s Big Band” is the official touring big band of the United States Army.

This 19-member ensemble has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America’s original art form, jazz.

Concerts by the Jazz Ambassadors are designed to entertain all types of audiences and the group has always been a favorite of our local audience. There will be no charge for this event but your season ticket will serve as admission to the concert or you can pick up a ticket at the Arts Council Office or the Virginian Review.

A blended theme of theater and football comes Tuesday, Nov. 18 with “Vince: The Life and Times of Vince Lombardi.”

Renowned actor John Pinero gives a riveting performance as the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers. From the golden overcoat to the horn-rimmed glasses, Pinero’s interpretation not only aims to motivate, but it also brings back a rush of memories highlighting much of football’s glory.

Pinero will visit the community for a week and give several motivational talks as well as perform the show for high school students.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the musical ensemble Brass Five will present a holiday concert that promises to entertain. Always playful and fun-loving, these raucous horn players make up one of the finest brass ensembles around. Bring the entire family for an outstanding brass concert that promises to be an evening of pure fun that instills the Yuletide spirit.

January is Broadway month at the Arts Council with two outstanding performances.

Raymond Jaramillio McLeod will end a week-long residency with a concert on Thursday, Jan. 8, called “Ray McLeod and Friends.”

Alleghany Highlands audiences will remember Ray as the handsome baritone who traveled to Curfman Hall with Neil Berg’s 101 Years of Broadway. All will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere when Ray returns bringing a blend of music from his substantial Broadway experience in shows like Jekyll & Hyde, Wonderful Town, A Tale of Two Cities, Dance of the Vampires with some of our home grown talent.

On Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 Maestro David Wiley of Roanoke Symphony Orchestra performs with two extraordinarily talented sisters, Adelaide Muir Trom-betta and Wendy Muir, as they bring to life some of Broadway’s greatest women’s roles.

If you love Broadway tunes or if you are a fan of beautifully trained voices, you will not want to miss this performance of show-stopping selections from shows like Wicked, Spam-alot, West Side Story, Peter Pan, Into The Woods, The Great American Songbook, and more.

The season will close on Monday, March 2, as local audiences experience the jubilant expression of the human body with The Lula Washington Dance Theatre.

LWDT is a Los Angeles-based repertoire dance ensemble that performs innovative and provocative choreography by Lula Washington.

This amazing company tours internationally and has been received with acclaim and admiration. Washington, whose work has been called “brilliant” by the Los Angeles Times, has steadfastly focused on using dance to explore social and humanitarian issues.

Mrs. Washington and her company of dancers will be in residence in the Alleghany Highlands speaking and performing to area school children as well as the public performance.

Season tickets are on sale now in the Arts Council office at 450 W. Main Street, adjacent to Stellar One Bank in Covington.

These tickets can also be purchased from any Arts Council board member.  Those members are David Wheeler, president; Sandra Minter, first vice-president; Steve Minter, second vice-president; Brenda Linken-hoker, secretary; Tonya Jones, treasurer; Kayla Austin; Pat Citro; Kristen Garten; Pat Johnson;  Glenn Kidder; Audrey Lear; Bonnie Lockhart; Linda Morrison; Anne Scruggs; Rachael Thompson; Allan Tucker and Melody Weese.

A season ticket good for admission to all events is $85 adult and $35 student with a family pass priced at $195. Board members are also accepting contributions from individuals and memorial contributions for a special section on the donor page of the programs at each performance.

Along with individual and corporate donors, funding is also provided by The Alleghany Foundation, the Virginia Commission for the Arts the National Endow-ment for the Arts, Foun-dation for Roanoke Valley, the Reynolds Foundation, city of Covington, County of Alleghany and town of Clifton Forge.
