JONESVILLE — The surname Fry and Bath County golf — the two hold a strong bond.
Wednesday, another Fry kept up the family tradition.
Charger sophomore Caleb Fry carded a 37 on the back nine, posting an 80 at the Group 1A West Regional tournament at the Cedar Hill Country Club.
Fry’s score was good enough for a tie for sixth place and an individual spot at next week’s Group 1A state event at the Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon.
“Caleb really showed his grit on the back nine — solid as heck,” said BCHS coach Terry Bradley.
It’s the second player that Bradley has helped to state play.
The other, ironically, was Caleb’s brother Alex, who played in the state event in 2010.
The Fry roots and high school golf go much deeper.
Caleb’s dad Mark, currently the head pro at The Omni Homestead’s Cascades Course, is a two-time state qualifier, including a state champion in 1984, and his uncle Greg won the state championship in 1980.
The regional actually started on Monday, but was rained out with all players starting over again on Wednesday.
“We played so well on Monday, the rainout just killed us, sitting around for a day and a half,” said Bradley.
Senior Clay Robertson had a 39 on the front nine, but finished the day with an 84, three shots out of a playoff spot.
“I hate to see Clay end his career like that,” Bradley said. “He just stumbled with his putter on the back nine and that’s how slim the margin is.”
The Chargers finished sixth in the eight-team field.
“I am proud of our team,” said Bradley. “We were hoping for a top four finish. But overall, a very successful season and something to build on for next season.”
Fry is in the 9 a.m. Monday state pairing with Parry McCluer’s Kennon Burnett, Adam Campbell of Rappahannock and Jacob Coleman of Honaker
Tuesday’s tee-times in the 36-hole event will be based on Monday’s play.
