WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The White Sulphur Springs Public Library has announced the arrival of 79 new books for its juvenile circulation collection.
The purchase of these books was made possible through the Books For Children grant, The Libri Foundation, Bill Straw-bridge, Meg Wallhagen and the generosity of various individuals and groups in the White Sulphur Springs community.
The library first heard it was eligible for this matching grant in August, provided it could raise $350. The library appealed to the community and its members answered in force.
The Old White Garden Club, Moran Concessions and the owner of theVillage Inn gave generously to this undertaking. Various individuals also donated toward this grant either in their name, a family member’s name or anonymously.
The new books cover a wide spectrum of subjects. The library has new easy reader books like “It’s All About Me-Ow,” “Nighttime Ninja,”and Mac Barnett’s “Extra Yarn,” just to name a few.
The library also has historical fiction and nonfiction books such as “Henry and the Cannons,” “Black Elk’s Vision: A Lakota Story” and “Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life Bass Reeves” by Vaunda Nelson.
The juvenile science section received a large influx of new titles covering all sorts of different topics. The library now has new books on a variety of animals including cheetahs, polar bears, orangutans and sea turtles, just to name a few.
They also received books about space such as “A Black Hole Is Not a Hole” and “The Mighty Mars Rovers;” books about geology like “Volcano Rising;” and books about the environment such as “No Monkeys No Chocolate.”
The library also has new books that can introduce children to various social issues, like “The Goodbye Cancer Garden” and an updated illustrated rendering of Langston Hughes’ “I Too Am American.”
All of these books have earned awards or starred reviews from various children’s or educational associations.
The staff of the library looks forward to introducing these new books to the public.
