Built in Roanoke in 1950, the Class J No. 611 remains a proud symbol of our railroad legacy. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, I had the privilege of presenting a Congressional Record plaque to Mendy Flynn at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

The 2014 County of Bath Chamber “Cascades Classic” Golf Tournament was held on Sunday at the Cascades Course at the OmniHomestead Resort.

Despite the dreary weather the rain held off and 15 teams showed up for a friendly competition.

The winners of this year’s tournament were Adam Erskine, Bugs Phillips, Justin Windon and Nick Carson with a score of 59. Other individual winners included Butch Buchannan, Eddie Johnson, Beverly Kee, Adam Erskine and Josh Ginger. Winners received free rounds of golf to various nearby courses.

“We wished the weather had cooperated just a little better, but these sportsmen and women love the game.  Some wet grass wasn’t going to deter them from playing,” said Emily Plecker, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and coordinator of the event. “This event is not only just a fundraiser for the Chamber but a great way for the business community to show their support for chamber initiatives.

If local businesses didn’t sponsor a hole many of them sponsored a whole team,” Plecker explained. “We even had a team drive all the way in the pouring rain from Georgia the morning of to make it just in time to tee off and show their support for the Chamber. The community’s enthusiasm is really what we value most about this event.”

Nick Moga, chamber board member and event coordinator, was able to play in the tournament.

“I’m on the Chamber board but I also enjoy golf so I’ve been happy to be involved in the planning process over the years,” Moga said. “The general consensus was that everyone had a great time!”

The County of Bath Chamber of Commerce would like to thank The OmniHomestead for co-sponsoring the event and for always providing them excellent service. They would also like to thank the following sponsors:
County of Bath Tourism, First & Citizens Bank, Natural Retreats Homestead Preserve, Phillips Insurance, The Owner’s Club, The Inn at Gristmill Square, Hillcrest Motel, Bath Community Hospital, Webb’s General Store, Alleghany Printing Company, Dominion Resources, Highlands Community Bank, P.C.S.S., LLC, MeadWestvaco, Vine Cottage Inn, The Springs Nursing Center, Dr. Diamond Family Dental, Kool Dri, Inc., McLaughlin Young Funeral Home, Alleghany Motor Corp., Bacova Properties, Covington Honda Nissan, Safehome Systems, BARC, Ashwood Station, Bath County Collision Center and Cucci’s.

Also those who donated door prize or goody bag items included Warm Springs Mountain Woodworks, BB&T, Natural Retreats, Safehome Systems, Hicklin Land Surveying, Graphic Resources, Dominion Resources, First & Citizens Bank and Phillips Insurance.

This event would not be possible without sponsor support.

The Chamber is looking forward to next year’s tournament and hopes that even more folks will take advantage of the event. Next year’s date is to be announced.
