HOT SPRINGS — Parry McCluer closed out its regular season unbeaten with a 42-0 victory over Bath County Friday night.
With the loss in their home finale, the Chargers fell to 0-9 on the season and 0-3 in the Pioneer District.
Parry McCluer scored on six of its seven possessions in the game with the senior running back tandem of Ryheem Dawson and Logan Arthur shredding the Charger defense for a combined 344 yards on the ground.
Dawson had 180 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 23 and 62 yards.
Arrhur scored three touchdowns and ran for 164 yards on eight carries. His scoring runs came from 75, 17 and 16 yards out.
“We fought hard and I’m proud of the kids for that. They fought hard tonight just like they have all year, but we were just outmanned by a good football team. We got some key people banged up last week,” Charger coach Will Fields said.
Parry McCluer, 10-0, achieved its first unbeaten regular season since 1978. The Blues have a bye week before beginning regional play in two weeks.
With his 180 yards against the Chargers Friday night, Dawson moved to 1,405 yards for the season. Arthur also surpassed the 1,000-yard mark with his 164-yard effort. He now has 1,043 yards for the season.
Bath junior running back Tanner Plecker celebrated his birthday by rushing for 76 yards on 17 carries. He also passed for 29 yards.
The Chargers close out their season next Friday at Covington. The Cougars defeated James River Friday night 37-28 to go 5-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Pioneer.
“Covington’s got a good team. They’ve played a tough schedule and we know they’re talented. They’re the type of team that came make a deep run in the playoffs. Hopefully, we’ll have some of our key people back when we play them,” Fields said.
Friday marked the final home game for five Bath County seniors — Skylor Brookman, Gabe Wells, Levi Riley, Junior Grimm and Braydon Gillispie.
Wells rushed for 17 yards on 10 carries, and Grimm, a 299-pound lineman, was given a redzone carry late in the fourth quarter. He bullied his way for four yards before being stopped short of the endzone.
