NEW CASTLE — Leteashia Clarke scored a game-high 19 points, 12 coming in a big second quarter, lifting the Covington girls to a 44-23 Pioneer District win over Craig County here Tuesday night.

The game was shortened to seven-minute quarters due to the threat of impending weather.

Kayla Campbell added 10 for the Cougars, while Sa’Mone Moore scored nine and dished out five assists.

Brittany Keyser, Montanna Hall and Shalia Notice all contributed two each for the winners.

Melia Hutton led the Rockets with 10 points.

Senior Bailey Hall, who was severly injured in a car accident in late December at a  holiday tournament in Tennessee, was inserted late in the second quarter and played two minutes in the fourth period.

“We went up there and got a win,” said CHS coach Mark Pifer. “Everything was a rush from the time we got there and it showed at the beginning of the game. But we settled down and did a pretty good job of turning them over in our press.”

Pifer also commented on Hall’s return.

“It was great to see Bailey out there tonight and Kiesha (Forbes) — the other girl injured in the accident — went on the trip with us too,” he said. “It was great to be back together again.”

The Cougars (8-0 Pioneer District, 15-4 overall) host Craig County in a return match-up tonight at the CHS Gym.

Covington won the junior varsity game 32-21 in a contest that featured five-minute quarters.

Lakin Tucker led the Cougars with 14 points, Lauren Gillespie had seven, Morgan Tucker scored five, Lizzie Baker had four and Abby Perkins added two.
