EARLYSVILLE — Gaige Kern raced to a third place finish, highlighting Alleghany’s peformance at the Albemarle Cross Country Invitational at Panorama Farms Saturday.

The Mountaineer boys finished 24th in the 34-team field.

“We were competing mostly against 4A and 5A schools with 60 to 100 people on their teams,” said AHS coach Jeremy Bartley.

Matthew Novak of Deep Run won the individual boys title, holding off Western Albemarle’s Gannon Willcutts by a second and Kern by 14 seconds.

“Gaige got sucked out too fast at 4:50 pace, but he said he needed to get used to it,” Bartley said. “We will be tapering him over the next few weeks, while increasing his quality runs. He should be peaking at the right time.”

Karleigh Thompson ran the best time for the AHS girls, finishing 61st amongst 212 runners.

“Karleigh is back as our team leader and is regaining her fitness,” Bartley said. “Patricia Lee keeps running better and better.”

The Alleghany girls, who were missing Margaret Donnen for the meet, finished 25th in the 28-team field.

Jordan McPeek and Gabriella Pichette were the top finishers for CMS in the middle school race.

Alleghany will run Saturday at the Runnin’ With  The Wolves Roctoberfest at Wolf Branch Farm in Forest.
