LOW MOOR — Gaige Kern set a new course record here Saturday.

The talented senior blew away the field by over a minute and led the Mountaineers to a team win at the Alleghany Invitational at Clifton Middle School.

“Gaige ran a 16:45 and that effort on our course is equivalent to 15:40s or 15:50s on a fast course,” said AHS coach Jeremy Bartley.

Alleghany posted an eight-point team win over Lord Botetourt.

“Koty Bowen is a new runner and is moving up the ranks,” said Bartley. “We are trying to get someone closer to our top four to seal the conference and it may be him.”

The Conference 31 championships will be contested on the CMS course on October 28.

“The guys got in there and fought to win a tight race,” Bartley added. “With William Byrd added in Conference 31, it is going to be a great race.”

The girls varsity race saw Rockbridge County’s Mallory Keeley edge Alleghany’s Marlee Parker by seven seconds.

“Marlee is running spectacular races and outworking the entire conference,” Bartley said. “Each week she is closing in on the conference front runners by huge chunks of time. I’m betting she is going to surprise a lot of people at the conference race.”

Lord Botetourt edged the Mountaineers by seven points for the girls team win.

“The girls are getting better each week and healing,” Bartley said. “Our usual front runner, Karleigh  Thompson,  is suffering from knee pain from an ACL injury two years back.”

Gracie Conner and Jordan McPeek led the effort of the Clifton Middle School team Saturday.

“Gracie is really impressing me,” said the coach of the sixth grader. “I can’t wait to see her develop. Jordan McPeek had a great race.”

A total of 143 runners participated in the event.

“I want to especially thank JenFab for donating some very nice team trophies and for all the volunteers that helped out,” Bartley finished. “The meet was a success with all of the teams present.”

Both Alleghany and Clifton Middle will run at the Concord Invitational at Pipestem State Park on Saturday.
