Mr. Herbert Lanier Simmons, Sr., age 76, of Covington, died Friday, January 23, 2015, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.  He was the husband of Leona Meadows Simmons.
Mr. Simmons was born July 29, 1938 in Paint Bank, the son of the late Vernie Allen Simmons, Sr. and Stella Joyce Thompson Simmons.

A lifetime member of this community, he was employed by the Virginia Department of Transportation for thirty-eight years before his retirement.  He enjoyed deer hunting, gardening and working outdoors.  He also enjoyed watching NASCAR racing especially Richard Petty and later, Dale Earnhardt.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Simmons is survived by two sons, Herbert Simmons, Jr. and wife, Charity and Michael Brian Simmons and wife, Heather, all of Covington; one grandson, Casey Brian Simmons; one brother, Jimmy Simmons and wife, Kay of Moss Run; three sisters, Katherine Pritt of Covington, June Simmons of Covington and Juanita Laughlin of Randleman, NC; one sister-in-law, Marion Meadows of Prince Wick, WV; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mary Hepler and Eleanor Bowing.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by two brothers, William Simmons and Vernie Allen Simmons, Jr. and three sisters, Thelma S. Lamb, Blanche S. Crane and Nancy S. Hosey.
A memorial service will be conducted at a 5:00 P.M. Friday, January 30, 2015, at First Christian Church with Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.
The family suggests that memorial tributes be made to the Alleghany Humane Society, P.O. Box 60, Low Moor, VA 24457.
